Brent Versus the Catholic Church

Can I make a confession? There's a scene in Split Screen, my latest book, where Russel's parents make him go see a priest. Russel and that priest debate the church's take on gay people (which is, in both Russel's and my opinion, a creepy obsession with sexual acts and an illogical, almost pathological denial of the obvious, life-enriching feelings of love that can exist between people of the same sex).

In the end, Russel kinda makes the priest and the Church look like the foolish buffoons they are (IMHO). In fact, I even strongly hint that the priest is one of the "soul-sucking brain zombies" of the book's subtitle (Attack of the Soul-Sucking Brain Zombies).

Now here's the confession part: I almost cut that scene from the last draft of the book. I thought about all the book challenges my books have had over the years (and all the library and school sales I've undoubtedly lost out on because my books are too "gay"), and I said to myself, "Do I really need this headache right now? Do I really want to open this can of anti-Catholic worms?" And while I'd tried really hard not to stereotype Catholics in that scene, I worried I'd let my strongly negative feelings of the Church get in the way of my writing; would people find it shrill and clunkily written?

Finally, let's face it: I have a few friends who still cling to the sinking ship that is the Catholic Church, and I didn't want to hurt their feelings.

In the end, I decided, No, I really like this scene, and I've never read anything quite like it before. And for the record, that exact scene actually really happened to me, almost word-for-word.

So the book came out a couple of months ago, and the scene I've probably gotten the most feedback on is--yes, you guessed it!--the scene with the priest. I haven't heard a single negative word, just praise over how much people really like it.

Which isn't to say that this scene won't still get the book banned somewhere, but what can you do?

Anyway, despite being raised Catholic, and despite having sixteen years of Catholic schooling, I'm currently no fan of the Catholic Church. Obviously.

So what does this have to do with anything? Well, just that today the second highest ranking doctrine official at the Vatican (and a close friend of Pope Benedict, who definitely shares this official's views) called same-sex marriage "evil" and "perverse."

As I read this pronouncement, my first reaction was just to laugh. This sort of rhetoric is, of course, nothing new from this pope and this church (or even from Pope John Paul II, I'm sorry to point out to people who were fans of the previous pope).

But it's just so ludicious: two people loving each other, and having that love acknowledged by the government, is "evil"?! Legal protections to keep them from being kicked out of their homes or kept from hospital rooms where one partner might be dying, are "evil"?!! The best, most important, most moral thing in my life, my relationship with Michael, my partner of 15 years, is "evil"?!!!!

I'm speechless. I don't know how to respond to someone who sees the world in such a radically different way.

But I will say this: I can't believe I ever considered cutting that scene! I was worried that I was stereotyping them? Ha!

Wow. Having your relationship called "evil" sure clarifies the mind.

It's all cool,

Brent Hartinger

when we were at Disney last week. Everytime we took the monorail to the Magic Kingdom we passed the Wedding Pavilion. I told the kids how until very recently Disney didn't allow gay marriage. Both kids were appalled. "Why not?" "That's so stupid!"

I was really sickened when I read the Vatican comments today.

Ha! I'll tell Michael.

And yeah, it's pretty appalling, what the Vatican says...

*hugs* Brent I'm so sorry that people are so small brained. Good for you for leaving that scene in, you are NOT evil! (I'm sure Michael isn't either, I just haven't met him...yet;) )

When I was in Thailand in February, I saw a copy of Out Magazine, and Herr Pope was the cover story, essentially being outed. I'm not Catholic, I've never been to Italy, and I don't speak Italian, so I have no way of knowing whether the contents of the article were anything other than wild conjecture. Interesting reading, though, and if there's any substance to the writer's claims, the level of hypocrisy in the Vatican beggars belief. (Oh, wait, what else is new?)

It wouldn't totally shock me, except I don't think these sexually abusing priests are really "gay." I think they're just really really warped, in part becuase of the teachings of their church (that says there is NO healthy expression of their sexualities).

Brent, thanks for sharing your story of that particular scene. I'm so glad you left it in and that you're getting positive feedback. Let's hear it for literary courage!

As for same-sex marriages, the sign I carry to pertinent rallies is GAY LOVE NO THREAT TO MY LOVE.

As if we've got too much love going on in the world right now. Sigh.

My thoughts exactly. You can only think the way they do if you've never met an actual gay person or been with an actual gay couple.

But thanks. ;-)

I love that scene! In fact, i've read it several times simply because I love it, and because it reminds me, when my folks drag me to church, of just how wrong the church is. Definitely glad you didn't cut it.

I'm glad you left the scene in, too. By seeing that conversation written, it allows readers to think about and process those ideas on their own--seeing the logic in it and formulating their own thoughts without having to fight through a verbal discussion.

As for the Vatican, don't they have anything better to worry about? I'm sure, if they look hard enough, they can find some true evil in the world to pick on. Sheesh.

PS: I *finally* had time to post a public thank you for the conference call you had with my students a few weeks ago on my blog. So, thank you yet again!

It really is absolutely appalling, the kinds of attitudes the Catholic church has. Which isn't to say that all Catholics adhere 100% to these ideas (I mean, it's not like that doctrine about contraception is being listened to, either...) or even that all priests do, but as an institution - good grief. It's inexcusable.

Incidentally, I liked that scene. :)

Oh, sure! I definitely know that.

(But sadly, I find that many, many Catholics are unaware what this pope, the last pope, virtually all the bishops, and most priests are saying about gay people, and how the Church uses its collective money and force to lobby against rights and dignity for GLBT folks. That's money and influence that these pro-gay folks GIVE to the anti-gay Church, albeit often in ignorance. The Church is within its rights to express its beliefs (though I sometimes question whether they deserve tax-exempt status if they act like political entities). But church-members are within THEIR rights to express their beliefs to their Church...by lobbying the priests and bishops, withholding money, or joining another Church. The Church will not change until its members MAKE it change. We all have a responsibility to try to change those who speaking our names, or else we become complicit in that speaking. I'm just sayin'.)

But yeah, some of my best friends are Catholic. Seriously.

Hey Brent - just finished the book. Loved it (of course) and LOVED that scene and somehow knowing you, I KNEW that was a scene from your life because it totally sounded like I imagined you would be as a teenager. I, unfortunately, didn't have nearly as much clarity and confidence at that age. Anyway - awesome - thanks! Teresa

By the way, the continued absurdity of the church leaves me speechless and feeling entirely dismissive of their existence. Of course, they aren't calling me evil because I'm such a nice white married person with children - if they only knew what lies beneath some of those "morally correct lifestyles"......maybe they would be less quick to judge the ones they choose to focus upon.

The big higher-ups make a lot of noise and fuss, but down here, where the regular people live, it's been my experience that even Catholics who believe homosexuality is a sin are often far more tolerant and loving than their Protestant counterparts. I'm a Catholic by adult choice, and I find I really have to look toward the essence of the message (i.e. love one another, which is harder than it looks) and sift out the baggage. In the Bible, there are more instances of condoning of slavery than there are of condemning homosexuality. Also, it wasn't too long ago that interracial marriage was illegal. So....

it's a tough row to hoe. I'm glad we're in it together in the grand scheme.
(P.S. I heard you speak at SCBWI in Seattle, and I thought you were terrific.)

I haven't read the book yet (but I will soon), but I'm really glad you kept that scene in. I've been going to catholic school since I was 6, so I know exactly where you're coming from. It is so hard to sit there and be taught that love can be wrong. My textbook basically states that it's okay to be gay, but you just can't act on your feelings because you must be married to do so, and that's not legal or right because you can't create children. It's a load of crap. I'm very vocal on my views, but it's still horrible to have to sit there and hear that. A speaker once told us that being gay was a "learned trait." It's backward people like them that make me fear for humanity.

I haven't read this book of yours. To be honest, I haven't read any of your books after Geography Club. Not because it was bad, but because I'm trying to write my own and I stopped reading books in the same genre as what I'm attempting to write.

So, I followed a link through to your journal from Strikethrough2007's link to [info]as_if_authors and read through your various posts. I stopped to comment on this one, not because of the content, but because of how you described your relationship with your partner. I'm a diction freak, and liked having a relationship defined as the most moral thing in a person's life. The dichotomy between Moral and Evil just struck me, and I wanted to comment and tell you that.

[info]as_if_authors is a very cool project, and I also wanted to take a second and thank you for spear heading that campaign.

Hope everything is going well for you, and good luck with the next books. Have a great rest-of-weekend.

*blushes* might actually help if I closed the strike through. *grin*
